Local History Projects Featured By DuBois Area Historical Society

June 07, 2011

The DuBois Area Historical Society concluded it spring speaker series at 7:30- p.m. Thursday with the annual program by Galen Kilmer, “DuBois Area High School Local History Projects.”  The program in the E. D. Reitz Museum, 30 W. long Avenue, DuBois, is free and open to the public.

Kilmer is DuBois Area High School’s local history teacher.  This will be his ninth year presenting this program, following in the tradition of Todd Thompson, retired local history teacher at DuBois High School, who did a similar program for many years.

The high school students bring a new perspective to history and how it is examined.  Kilmer will present the best of the projects completed by the students in his class, explain the course requirements and discuss how the students conduct their research.

Forty people attended the Third Annual DuBois Area Historical Society Spring Walk earlier in May.  Students from DuBois Area High School led the walk, which covered 20 sites in downtown DuBois.  Sarah Whitaker, a sophomore, was the student leader for developing the new walking tour.

June 4, the E. D. Reitz museum will be open during the Festival of the Arts from 10:00 a. m. to 4 p.m.

The DuBois Area Historical Society has planned a busy fall, beginning with its fifth annual open house Saturday, September 10 from 10:00 a. m. until 3 p.m.  The event is free and open to the public.

The fourth annual Spirit of DuBois Lantern walk will be October 15, exploring the area of the DuBois Brewing Company and its neighborhoods.  The walks will begin at 6:00 p.m. and leaves every20 minutes from the United Way Office.  Admission is $5.00 for adults, $3.00 for students and free for children sixth grade and younger if accompanied by an adult.

The 2010 activities will conclude with the Fifth Annual DuBois Area Historical Society luncheon, Saturday, November 12th at noon.  The guest speaker will be John Shenkle.  “Sky Soldiers:  Veterans of Air Combat.”  Location, Luncheon costs and menu will be announced later in the year.
