Honoring Veterans Through Historic Preservation

March 16, 2011

The 2010 DuBois Area Historical Society Calendar recognizes the 65th anniversary of the end of World War II, by featuring war memorials in the many communities served by the Society.

The DuBois Area Historical Society honors veterans and their contributions daily through its Veterans Room located in the museum at 28 W. Long Avenue, DuBois, PA.

Society founder and current President Evo G. Facchine was the driving force to establish a room at the Museum, themed toward all who have served their country in the armed services.

“My basic reason for this (Veterans) room was to try to get something in the society that more people in the community were interested in,” Facchine is quoted in a September 30 2007 article by Katie Weidenboerner in the Tri-County Sunday newspaper.

In that article Facchine noted visiting the Eldred World War II Museum, the Pennsylvania Military Museum in Boalsburg, and the Donald E. Lobaugh War Museum in Rimersburg as inspiration for the renovation article he directed in 2007.  He believes that the museum could become a major tourist attraction.

Facchine designed and led the renovation of a room in the museum to accommodate the Society’s collection of military items.  Assisting with the construction work over a two month period were board members Rob Peoples, Jr., Beecher Klingensmith, and Eugene Aravich and volunteers Ed Watson and Jack Harvey.

The Veterans Room includes uniforms, replicas of military aircraft; maps showing travel routes of local military units, and photographs.  Of great local interest are lists of area veterans who served in the military; unusual items such as the cover of a “Newsweek” magazine featuring Clarence “Clink” Micknis, a DuBois radio personality on the Polka Party on WCED, and photographs of who is believed to be the first West Point graduate from DuBois; and much more.  The collection continues to grow through the donation of artifacts by area residents.

The official opening of the Veterans Room to the public came during the DuBois Area Historical Society’s open house in September 2007

“We want to make it (the museum) something where people can really come in and find something pertaining to their family.  Veters’ sacrifices touch a lot people,” Facchine is quoted in the 2007 article.

The DuBois Area Historical Society’s effort to grow its collection and reach the people of the area is ongoing.  All are invited to visit the museum to view the Veterans Room and the collection.

The DuBois Area Historical Society is interested in growing the Veterans Room collection.  Items of all wars are accepted from donors and arrangements can be made to exhibit items on loan.
