In addition to the Spirit of DuBois Lantern Walk, the DuBois Area Historical Society closed 2010 with several other successful activities.

LUNCHEON – The Society’s 4th Annual Luncheon featured Barbara Clark (right), family and consumer science teacher at Brockway High School and a long time quilter, speaking about the “Hidden Messages of Quilts.” Thirty-eight members and guests turned out for the program focusing on how the Underground Railroad may have used quilts to send messages to runaway slaves prior to the Civil War. The luncheon was held in the meeting room of the DuBois Diner.

ELECTIONS – Also at the luncheon, elections were held for two-year terms on the DuBois Area Historical Society Board. The results:  2nd vice president – Tom Schott; secretary – Gene Aravich; treasurer – Jerry Watson; director of genealogy – Audrey Lott; representative for Bloom/Brady Township – Jean Hayes; representative for Huston Township – Linda Riccadona; and representative for Falls Creek – Ken Wisor. The positions of 1st vice president, curator, librarian, and representative for Treasure Lake are currently open. Anyone interested in filling any of these positions should contact the DuBois Area Historical Society.

RUMMAGE SALE – Thanks to Dave Logan, who provided the empty storefront at 36 West Long Ave. for several days, the DuBois Area Historical Society held a rummage sale on Dec. 4 and 6.

No items from the DuBois Area Historical Society collection were included in the sale, but items such as books and knick-knacks to Christmas tree and decorations, and some antiques that were donated to the Society or found in the buildings when they were purchased many years ago were offered for sale. The result was $370 in sales and $50 in 2011 calendars sold. From a different perspective, the sale also emptied some items from the Society’s building freeing up much needed storage space.

2011 CALENDAR – For those still in need for a 2011 calendar, the 2011 DuBois Area Historical Society calendar, featuring “Schools Remembered” as its theme, is still available for a $5 donation. In addition to the Historical Society, calendars may be purchased at Curves, DuBois Area Chamber of Commerce, Kohlhepp’s True Value, Peaceable Kingdom, Rosie’s Book Store, and Way’s Office Supply in DuBois and Willar’s Grocery in Falls Creek.
