Students to Lead Historic Downtown Walking Tour

            Students from DuBois Area High School will lead the DuBois Area Historical Society’s Third Annual Spring Walk, May 19, at 6 p.m. leaving from the E.D. Reitz Museum, 30 W. Long Ave., at 6 p.m. The walk is free and open to the public.

            Sarah Whitaker, a sophomore, was the student leader for developing the new walking tour. She undertook the project as part of her Girl Scout Gold Award Project. Support came from Anne Young, Secondary Pupil Enrichment program teacher, and other students in that program including:  Lily Brubaker, Drew Drum, Ella Glabicki, John Jacobson, Aaron Lines, Alli Mosco, Jenny Reese, Catherine Sheffo, and Monica Sheffo.

            The tour covers 20 sites in downtown DuBois. The students will lead the tour, explaining the history of the buildings at the stops. All walk participants will receive a brochure written and designed by the students and printed by Jeff Tech.

            The students and their advisor received additional help and advice from Laura Read, Daniel Minns, Tom Schott, Virginia Schott, Galen Kilmer, Todd Thompson, and the DuBois Area Historical Society.

            Fourteen members and guests attended the March program of the DuBois Area Historical Society where Sean Craig presented “Photoshoping Your Old Photos.”

            Upcoming speakers and activities include:  May 26 – Galen Kilmer, DuBois Area High School Local History Projects, E. D. Reitz Museum, 7:30 p.m. June 4 – E. D. Reitz Museum open during Festival of the Arts, Downtown DuBois; September 10 – DuBois Area Historical Society Annual Open House, 10 a.m.–3 p.m. Oct. 15 – Fourth Annual “Spirit of DuBois Lantern Walk,” leaving from the DuBois Area Chamber of Commerce Building, first walk 6 p.m. November 12 – Annual Luncheon, speaker:  John Shenkle, Sky Soldiers: Veterans of Air Combat, TBA.
