Genealogy Introductory Program

September 24, 2003 at 9:10 PM

Jim Sterrett of Brockway will provide an “Introduction to Genealogy” as the guest speaker at the Oct. 15 meeting of the DuBois Area Historical Society. The presentation begins at 7:30 p.m. in the E.D. Reitz Museum, 30 W. Long Ave., DuBois. It is free and open to the public.

Sterrett was born in DuBois and grew up in the Beechwoods area. He taught history at the college level, mostly at Geneva College, before retiring to DuBois. He has conducted several genealogy presentations since returning to the area.

“Genealogy is a hobby,” said Sterrett. “My program will cover the basic how and why of genealogy. I plan to explain why genealogy has boomed over the last several decades and tell people how to get started in genealogical research and what to look at because there are so many categories of information sources.”

A question and answer session will be a part of the program.

The DuBois Area Historical Society houses an active genealogical component in the former Shively Jewelry Store on West Long Ave., DuBois. The library houses a large collection of books and other items related to genealogy research. So far in 2003, the genealogy staff led by Audrey Lott has handled research requests from nine states, Canada, and overseas.

Over 50 members and guests attended the DuBois Area Historical Society’s 21st Annual Banquet in September. Todd Thompson was the guest speaker, talking about the Great DuBois Fire of 1888.

The programs will continue Nov. 16 with historical society president Evo Facchine, presenting a program, “Charles and Donald McDonald, World War II Heroes,” in honor of Veteran’s Day.

The 2004 programs include:  Feb. 12, Eric Rensel, “Parker Dam Tea and Talk”; March 16, Sue Raspatello, “The History of the Red Hat Society; April 21, Tom Schott,  “The Washington, D.C., World War II Memorial, A Personnel Connection; and May 26, Galen Kilmer, “DuBois Area High School Local History Projects.”
